When I first sat down to write 12 Wishes, I finished all twelve in a single night. The ideas came easily. The writing, in hindsight, didn’t always.
As I’ve published them over the past few months, I’ve connected with some far more than others. A few weren’t my best work. But I published them anyway because I’d made a commitment. I’ve been writing here every week for more than a year, and even while on leave I wanted to see these scheduled posts through.
Now I’ve reached the end. The last few aren’t good enough, and I’m not going to send them just to keep the streak alive.
Instead, I’m writing this in the five minutes I have while Andrea feeds Emmett. I’m sitting on the floor of his nursery, waiting for us to eat dinner together while he plays in his little tent before bedtime.
I hope my kids grow up with the strength to keep their commitments, especially when it’s inconvenient or difficult. Trust is hard to earn, and in the end your word is one of the few things that’s truly yours.
Stand by it.
